Canada Post Shipping Information (Temporary Shipping Policy Addendum)
Context
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) and Canada Post are negotiating a new agreement at the moment.
While Canada Post is still operating, the union established a national overtime ban which will affect the speed of fulfillment on all Canada Post shipments.
A strike could happen any day if the parties decide that they can't reach an agreement under the current conditions.
Impact on untracked lettermail
The untracked lettermail shipping options is the most popular option on my store.
While paused for a while due to the uncertainty of potential strike actions untracked lettermail is re-enabled at the moment. This is to give you the customer full agency on how you want your order to be shipped.
If you choose untracked lettermail as a shipping option while Canada Post and CUPW are still negotiating their agreement you will assume the full risk of doing so, which includes:
- longer than usual shipping times on lettermail
- your package might get stuck for weeks if a strike happens
- your package might take several weeks to arrive even after a potential strike ended due to backlogs
- your package might get lost
Impact on tracked shipments
As long as Canada Post and CUPW haven't come to an agreement we will avoid Canada Post as a shipping provider whenever possible.
Some exceptions may apply, such as international shipments where Canada Post can be the only suitable shipping provider in some situations.
We are working with UPS, Purolator and Chit Chats for tracked shipments while the situation remains unresolved.
Please note that Chit Chats sometimes routes the shipments through hubs that are not intuitive, e.g. a shipment to Toronto might get routed through Montreal or vice versa even though it was fulfilled from Ottawa.
